Coming off a grueling road trip where they won five and lost four, the Los Angeles Dodgers put Tommy Edman on the IL and activated Max Muncy.
Edman sprained his right ankle during Sunday’s game. In May, Edman originally sprained the troublesome ankle that resulted in a trip to the IL. Edman came back quickly, but he has been in and out since then.
In March and April, Edman hit eight home runs, but since then, the switch hitter has struggled. Edman couldn’t put his weight on the ankle while he was batting left-handed, which affected his offensive production.
Before Monday’s game, Dave Roberts said that the Dodgers need to keep Edman on the IL long enough, so they don’t need to manage the ankle for the rest of the season. Since May, Edman has been in and out of the lineup because of the ankle. For most of the season, Edman couldn’t play in center field, where the Dodgers envisioned him to play.
When Max Muncy was upended on a stolen base on July 2nd, no Dodger fan thought he would be starting on August 4th. On July 3rd, after the MRI showed only a bone bruise, the Dodgers estimated Muncy would miss 6 to 8 weeks.
When Muncy was injured, he was the Dodgers’ best hitter. While he was on the IL, the Dodgers’ offense struggled. Muncy can work the count, which is crucial.
After a painfully slow start, Muncy has a .250 batting average with 20 home runs and 55 RBI. The Dodgers hope Muncy will continue providing offensive production.
