On a night when
Bobby Miller came off the IL and gave the Dodgers a good 6.1-inning performance,
the bullpen let the team down. The Dodgers’ offense produced well. On a beautiful
Wednesday night at Coors Field, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Colorado
Rockies 7-to-6.
When the
Dodgers activated Bobby Miller, they put Walker Buehler on the IL. Buehler has right
hip inflammation. Since he returned to the Dodgers in May after his second
Tommy John surgery, Buehler hasn’t performed up to expectations. He doesn’t have
good off-speed pitches, and his trademark four-seam fastball didn’t have much movement.
Buehler should have time to work on things to improve.
Teoscar
Hernandez singled with two outs in the first but didn’t score.
For the
first time since April, Bobby Miller pitched competitively in the major leagues.
With two outs in the first, Miller allowed a single, but he looked good, including
his command. He walked a batter. He allowed a three-run blast. Miller should
have been expected to make his return to the major leagues at Coors Field, a place
that gives pitchers nightmares.
After an out
in the second, Gavin Lux singled, and Cavan Biggio was plunked. Kiké Hernández walked
to load the bases. Shohei Ohtani tied the game with a three-run double. Freddie
Freeman singled in Ohtani. Teoscar Hernandez struck out to end the scoring
opportunity for the Dodgers.
With one
out in the second, Miller allowed a single and a walk but got out of the jam by
convincing the Rockies to hit into a double play.
Jason
Heyward walked with an out in the third. The Dodgers didn’t score.
In the third
with an out, Miller allowed a single and didn’t let the Rockies score.
In the fourth,
the Rockies retired the Dodgers in order.
Miller gave
up a lead-off triple and the tying run in the fourth.
Freeman singled
to open the fifth. Teoscar Hernandez hit into a force play. On Andy Pages’ single,
Hernandez went to third. Heyward had a two-run double.
Miller pitched
a scoreless fifth.
With an out
in the sixth, Ohtani singled. Freeman hit into a double play.
Miller was perfect
in the sixth.
In the seventh,
the Dodgers went quietly.
Miller allowed
a lead off double in the seventh, and with an out in the seventh, Dave Roberts relieved
Miller with Daniel Hudson. Considering that Miller hadn’t pitched for the
Dodgers since April 10th, Miller pitched great.
Biggio made
an error allowing the Rockies to score. Hudson allowed a double. A sacrifice
fly scored the tying run.
The Dodgers
stranded two runners in the eighth.
Blake Treinen
pitched a scoreless eighth inning despite allowing a double.
With two
outs in the ninth, Pages doubled but didn’t score.
Yohan Ramirez
allowed two singles. He allowed the winning run.
