Tommy Edman wanted to win this game. He made an awe-inspiring center field catch and hit a three-run homer. Tyler Glasnow didn’t have his best performance but kept his team in the game.

On a hot and humid Saturday night at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Washington Nationals, 6–5. They have the second-best record in the National League, so they would get a bye in the postseason.

The Dodgers’ offense jumped on Cade Cavalli in the first inning. Both Hunter Feduccia and Teoscar Hernández came through with singles to bring home Freddie Freeman and Kyle Tucker.

Tyler Glasnow had been brilliant in his two starts since coming off the IL, but on Saturday, he battled through six innings. The timing in his delivery was off, and he didn’t have the feel for his curveball. After a third-inning visit from Mark Prior, Glasnow used his slider and knuckle curveball more. He had eight strikeouts and three walks.

After the game, Glasnow said, “Timing was weird. Not much put away stuff.”

Alex Vesia and Evan Phillips were sharp.

In the seventh inning, the Dodgers battled. Alex Freeland had a walk, and Kiké Hernández singled. Since Edman has been filling in for the injured Shohei Ohtani, he has been a great leadoff hitter, 5-for-13. He didn’t miss a hanging slider. The Dodgers added another run in the eighth inning.

Tanner Scott retired the first two outs quickly and then gave up bullets. After allowing a run, Scott struck out the last batter of the game.

Before the game, the Dodgers had many health updates.

Ohtani would take batting practice on Saturday. If he doesn’t feel good on Sunday, he may go on the IL. The Dodgers don’t want to lose him for fifteen days, but they don’t want to rush him back and lose him again. During the game, Ohtani took swings with some intensity in the cage.  

Max Muncy was “under the weather.” He couldn’t play on Saturday.

Dalton Rushing had a sore elbow. Before the game, he was doing some throwing practice, and the elbow flared up. He will undergo some imaging on Saturday or Sunday. The Dodgers will go from there.

On Friday, Andy Pages threw the ball for the first time since having hand surgery to repair a fractured bone and reported no pain. This weekend, he will swing the bat.

Roki Sasaki threw an extended bullpen session on Friday. He looked good and didn’t make Dave Roberts want to be a player again. He will throw a live before being activated as a starter.

On Sunday, Edwin Díaz will have a rehabilitation assignment. He has made some mechanical changes while on the IL, and players say that he is nastier.

The Dodgers will try to sweep the Nationals with Justin Wrobleski on the mound.
