Three straight singles by Tommy Edman, Freddie Freeman, and Mookie Betts in the eighth inning lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4–3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on a picturesque Wednesday night.

The Dodgers took advantage of rookie Gabriel Hughes’ first-inning nerves to score three runs on a wild pitch and Kyle Tucker’s single. Then, Hughes retired fourteen consecutive batters until Max Muncy doubled in the sixth inning.

Roki Sasaki bounced back from a difficult outing against the San Diego Padres to pitch a quality start. His fastball command was much better, and he didn’t seem to be tipping his pitches as he did against the Padres. He allowed two solo home runs to Kyle Karros and Eduardo Julien. Sasaki struck out five while walking one. Although the Rockies are still in last place in the National League West, they have played much better than they did over two previous seasons, making this a positive outing for Sasaki to build upon.

Jack Dreyer pitched a solid seventh inning. Alex Vesia had a little difficulty in the eighth inning thanks to an uncharacteristic throwing error by Muncy. After Vesia retired two batters, Dave Roberts went to Eduardo Henriquez to get the last out. Tanner Scott pitched a perfect ninth inning.

After a day off, the Dodgers will start their last series before the All-Star break. Shohei Ohtani will be on the mound against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
