The Padres salvaged one game of a four-game series from the Dodgers.
The San Diego Padres’ 5–2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers kept them in the National League West race on a sunny late Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.
Emmet Sheehan pitched well for the first three innings and then struggled with his command. He pitched 4.1 innings and allowed a run. After last year, when he returned from Tommy John surgery and dominated the opponents, the Dodgers expected Sheehan to be one of their best starters, but he has struggled. The struggles have affected his confidence.
Jack Dreyer was sharp in relief for 1.2 innings.
At the beginning of this season, Kyle Hurt was great, particularly returning from Tommy John surgery. However, since the middle of May, he has struggled with his command. On Sunday, Hurt allowed four runs, including a three-run homer to Manny Machado. Since Evan Phillips is ready to return from his own Tommy John surgery, the Dodgers might send Hurt to Oklahoma City.
The Dodgers couldn’t capitalize on scoring runs. Shohei Ohtani returned to the lineup after missing Saturday’s game with a sore biceps. In the seventh inning, the Dodgers scored their two runs on Alex Freeland and Ohtani’s singles.
Eliezer Alfonzo, Jr, 26, made his major league debut on Sunday. His father couldn’t attend his son’s debut because of the Venezuelan earthquake that killed his wife and daughter. The Alfonzo family needs our support. If you can donate to the relief efforts for the Venezuelan earthquake, Miguel Rojas, Eduardo Henriquez, and Alfonzo would appreciate.
On Monday, with Eric Lauer on the mound, the Dodgers will start a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies.
