The Pirates had a five-run eighth inning against Kyle Hurt and Jack Dreyer after the Dodgers put six runs on the board.
On a hot and humid Wednesday night at PNC Park, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9–8.
For the last few starts, Shohei Ohtani has been dealing with a small blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand. He pitched well but had a command problem with his sweeper. In his 6.2 innings, he struck out six while walking three.
Alex Vesia came into the seventh inning and was victimized by a rare fielding error by Max Muncy.
In the fourth inning, Muncy doubled home Freddie Freeman, and Kyle Tucker singled in Muncy.
In the sixth inning, Ryan Ward hit his first major-league grand slam.
In May, the Dodgers’ bullpen was fantastic, but since then, the relievers have had problems.
Hurt began the eighth inning with two walks before giving up a three-run homer. Dreyer came in after Hurt allowed another runner to get into scoring position and gave up a two-run homer.
In the ninth inning, after Miguel Rojas singled, Ohtani socked a two-run homer.
Since Saturday, Will Smith has been dealing with a stiff neck, making him unable to play. After the loss, during an interview on SportsNet LA, Dave Roberts said that the Dodgers will put Smith on the IL and bring up Chuckie Robinson to backup Dalton Rushing, who has been doing an outstanding job in Smith’s absence.
On Thursday, with Justin Wrobleski on the mound, the Dodgers will look to win the series against the Pirates.
