At 80, Davey Lopes died. Since I became a Los Angeles Dodgers fan, I have known about Lopes.

Lopes was the second baseman in the famous infield of Steve Garvey, Bill Russell, and Ron Cey. He combined great base-running instincts with power. He was the Dodgers’ lead-off hitter and the heart and soul of the Dodgers. After the 1981 World Championship, he went to the Chicago Cubs. When Steve Sax won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1982, something was missing.

In 2011, Lopes returned to the Dodgers as a coach. He played a vital role in the development of Matt Kemp and Jayson Werth. His passion for the game was unmatched.

Lopes will be missed.
