For the first time since Orel Hershiser hurled a complete game in the World Series, Yoshinobu Yomamoto pitched a complete-game victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. The World Series is tied a game apiece.
Behind Yamamoto’s brilliance, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-to-1. The Dodgers scored first, but thanks to a Dodger misplay, the Blue Jays tied up the game. In the seventh, Will Smith and Max Muncy blasted two solo home runs, and the Dodgers added two more runs.
Saturday’s game was a must-win for the Dodgers. They couldn’t go back to Los Angeles down two games and have a good chance of winning their second consecutive World Series.
However, Kevin Gausman, Toronto’s starter, was dealing and retired sixteen consecutive hitters. At a point in the game, the Dodgers’ offense looked like dead.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto was excellent after a rough first inning. He had super control of all his pitches. He didn’t allow a hit after the third. Against a Blue Jays team that doesn’t strike out, he struck out eight. He didn’t allow a hit or a runner after third.
Kiké Hernàndez played his 87th playoff game, the most by a Dodger, passing Justin Turner.
After the Wild Card Series against the Cincinnati Reds, the Dodger offense has struggled, and Saturday was no exception. However, they manufactured two runs in the eighth. Andy Pages even got a hit. They took advantage of a wild pitch to score. If the Dodgers can get Teoscar Hernàndez hitting and not striking out, they will outscore the Blue Jays.
