The Los Angeles Dodgers salvaged one game on a six-game road trip. Behind Clayton Kershaw, the Dodgers beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-to-2. Shohei Ohtani blasted two solo home runs, and Mookie Betts had a solo home run. Edgardo Henriquez, Justin Wrobleski, and Jack Dreyer pitched wonderfully out of the bullpen. The Dodgers maintained a one-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the Western Division.
Though Clayton Kershaw didn’t feel like he had his best stuff, he managed to go through 5.2 innings allowing two runs. His breaking pitches baffled the young Orioles. He gave the Dodgers something to feel positive about after Saturday’s debacle. He struck out eight.
The Dodgers’ offense still wasted scoring opportunities, but Ohtani and Betts supplied the power. In the fourth, the Dodgers took advantage of the sloppy defense to score a run. In the ninth, Ben Rortvedt, the backup catcher, singled, and Ohtani walked. Betts, just missing a home run, singled in Rortvedt.
When Dave Roberts had to go to the bullpen, Dodger fans moaned. He used rookies who performed well. Roberts sometimes must use his high-priced veteran relievers. Even in September, Roberts is trying to look for relievers who he can trust. On Sunday, Henriquez, Wrobleski, and Dreyer helped their case to be the most trusted relievers in the Dodger bullpen.
