The Los Angeles
Dodgers avoided the sweep even though Walker Buehler lasted only three innings.
The Dodgers’ defense was shaky. Teoscar Hernandez and Mookie Betts had a
three-run homer. The Dodgers out-slugged the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-to-7.
To open the first,
Mookie Betts singled, Shohei Ohtani singled, and Freddie Freeman blasted a
three-run shot. Teoscar Hernandez doubled and Miguel Rojas’ single. Miguel Vargas
walked. the Dodgers didn’t score any more runs in the first.
Walker Buehler pitched
a perfect first.
The Dodgers saw only
ten pitches in the second as they were retired.
To open the second
inning, Betts committed a throwing error, and Kiké Hernandez made a throwing
error. The Pirates scored an unearned run. Buehler got out of the jam.
In the third, Andy
Pages had an infield single. Rojas grounded into a force play. The Dodgers didn’t
score and stranded a runner.
With an out in the
third, Buehler, who was on, allowed a single and a stolen base. He allowed another
single. A sacrifice fly scored the second run for the Pirates. Buehler allowed a
two-run blast to tie the score. Vargas had an error. He walked a batter and allowed
an infield single before getting out of the jam.
Vargas’ double opened
the fourth and went to third on Austin Barnes’ bunt. The Dodgers stranded Vargas.
Michael Grove relieved
Buehler in the fourth and pitched a perfect inning.
Teoscar Hernandez homered
to start the fifth. Andy Pages was plunked and moved to third on Rojas’ single.
Kiké Hernandez doubled in Pages. Vargas grounded into a force play. K. Hernandez
scored on a throwing error. Barnes singled and moved Vargas to second. Betts had
a three-run centerfield shot.
In the fifth, Grove
hurled a scoreless inning.
Teoscar Hernandez
singled to open the sixth, and Pages walked. Rojas doubled in Hernandez and moved
Pages to third. Kiké Hernandez walked to load the bases. Vargas lined into a double
play.
Daniel Hudson relieved
Grove in the sixth. Betts made a throwing error. He allowed a single, but he wiggled
out of the jam.
Blake Treinen
pitched a perfect seventh.
Evan Phillips allowed
a three-run homer. He used 31 pitches in the eighth to escape the jam.
With an out in the
ninth, Barnes and Betts walked. the Dodgers didn’t score.
Alex Vesia pitched
a perfect ninth.
